What are the causes of TMD?
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can get damaged due to extreme strain or wear and tear. The jaw muscles can also get damaged by some trauma such as an impact to the jaw as a result of a fall or some other accident.
Here are a few more causes for TMD
- Misalignment of the teeth, also called as 'poor occlusion', which creates an uneven bite
- Grinding of the teeth (Bruxism) caused due to a bad bite
- Bad posture of the head and neck
- Unhealthy eating habits which include chewing with too much food in the mouth
- Unhealthy diet with poor nutrition and the lack of dental hygiene
- Sleep disordered breathing or sleep apnea
- The TMJ cartilage is damaged due to Arthritis
Treating Temporomandibular Joint Disease (TMD)
TMJ can be the result of several factors affecting the jaw and its muscles. Your dentist will examine your jaws and based on the severity of your condition and pain you're experiencing, suggest the course of treatment. TMD treatment can vary from basic dental care to dental surgery.
Here are some treatments for TMD
1. Bite Splints
A bite splint or Occlusal Splint is one of the most common treatments for TMD. These are custom made by your dentist and made to fit over and in between the upper and lower teeth. A bite splint can help reduce muscle tension in the jaw.
2. Dental Treatment
TMD can be the result of an ill fitting denture, missing teeth or other dental condition. In this case your dentist may suggest a dental treatment such as an implant or dental bridge.
3. Physical Therapy
In order to help relax the muscles of the jaw, your dentist may recommend physical therapy along with certain medications.
